Elaine M. Phillips, Ph.D. President & CEO Elaine Phillips, Ph.D. is one of our co-founders and has served as President and CEO and a member of our board of directors since March 2008. Phillips has over 17 years of experience in pharmaceuticals and drug delivery for both commercialized products and products in development. Prior to joining Meritage, Phillips was Senior Vice President of Technical Operations at Verus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. where she was responsible for the technical aspects of products in Verus’ portfolio including the commercialization of the Twinject® epinephrine auto-injector.
Prior to joining Verus, Phillips was a member of ProPharmaCon, LLC providing drug development consulting and contract services to clients for products across the development cycle. She was employed at Dura Pharmaceuticals (then Elan) from 1997 to 2001 where she focused on the delivery of proteins and peptides to the lung. Prior to that, Phillips was in the Department of Pharmaceutics at Hoffmann-La Roche for five years where she had various functional responsibilities ranging from pre-formulation and aerosol formulation development, solid state characterization and package development. She has publications and patent applications in the fields of crystal growth, device design, drug delivery, controlled-release and pharmaceutical applications of super critical fluids.
Phillips has a Ph.D. in pharmaceutics from Virginia Commonwealth University, a B.Sc. in chemical engineering from the University of Kentucky and has performed post-doctoral studies in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Kansas. |

Malcolm R. Hill, Pharm.D. Chief Scientific Officer Malcolm Hill, Pharm.D. is one of our co-founders and has served as Chief Scientific Officer since March 2008. Hill has more than 25 years of academic and pharmaceutical industry experience in new product development and clinical trial design and execution, with a special emphasis in pediatrics and drug delivery systems. Prior to joining Meritage, Hill was Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Verus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. where he was responsible for various development-stage programs. Hill was a member of the senior management team at Dura Pharmaceuticals, where he served as a vice president and corporate officer. At Dura, Hill was responsible for all clinical development activities related to the Spiros® dry powder inhaler, including numerous asthma programs.
Prior to joining Verus, Hill was a Partner at ProPharmaCon, LLC, a product development and regulatory consulting company for clients with pharmaceutical products in every stage of the development cycle. Hill’s extensive academic career includes his position at National Jewish Medical and Research Center, where he conducted numerous clinical trials for pediatric therapies. He also served as an assistant professor in the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Colorado.
Hill earned his Pharm.D. from the University of Southern California and completed a post-doctoral program at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, San Diego, as well as a research fellowship in the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center. He has published more than 80 articles on the topics of clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, and the treatment of pediatric asthma and related conditions. |

Adam K. Simpson Chief Business Officer, Treasurer and Secretary Adam Simpson, J.D. is one of our co-founders and has served as Chief Business Officer, Treasurer and Secretary since March 2008. Simpson has worked on commercial and financial transactions for life science companies for approximately 10 years. Simpson was responsible for leading the acquisition of Meritage’s first product candidate in March 2008. At Meritage, he is responsible for corporate development and strategy and for managing the company’s intellectual property estate, legal affairs and financial operations.
Prior to joining Meritage, Simpson was the Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Verus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. While at Verus, Simpson was responsible for leading the sale of Verus’ pediatric asthma programs in a transaction valued at up to $310 million as well as in-licensing the technology for Verus’ various development programs. He also played an instrumental role in Verus’ financing efforts and oversaw the development of Verus’ intellectual property portfolio.
Prior to joining Verus, Simpson was an attorney at Latham & Watkins LLP where he focused on private and public financings, mergers and acquisitions and commercial transactions for life science companies.
Simpson received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego. |
